Some months more than others, there are days where we all find ourselves in a creative rut. “Everyones content, writing, ideas are better than mine and nothing I can ever do will match it.” Just let it out…
You’re human. Leonardo da Vinci himself had days where the canvas looked something extraterrestrial. Recognize it, know it wont be forever, and create yourself a life raft to grab onto when you’re headed down one.
Here are a few of my fall-backs when i’m trying to get some writing done, but can’t get past opening up Microsoft word.
1. Read a book
Keep the mind sharp. Grow that neuroplasticity by reading challenging books outside your comfort zone. I find that learning about a topic thats completely foreign to me, like quantum mechanics, or chaos theory, will flow the creative task with ease and superiority. Couple books for inspirational vibes:
The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People – Stephen R. Covey
Girl Wash Your Face – Rachael Hollis
2. Move your body
Get outside and connect with nature, release those endorphins. Walk on the beach, hike a new trail, jog around the block. Disconnect from the material world because there is a force in the natural world that can’t be put into words. It taps you into some kind of spiritual-ESP-creative-consciousness that makes you see things from a new perspective. It’s like taking LSD without ingesting it.
3. Watch an inspiring video…
The worst day of all though is when even thinking is a chore. I’ll take a pizza, wine, and re-runs of the office plz.. On days like this reading a book feels like ripping my nails off so i’ll opt for a ted talk or podcast to rev up the educational creativity.

4. Talk to yourself…
No, that wasn’t a computer error. I talk to myself. All the time! In the kitchen cooking, walks with the dog, in the mirror before bath time. Any time I start to question my life decisions, I play a little game of “what I want my life to look like 5 years from now” and re-ignite the dream. I’ll even go so far as to give a speech of what i’d say if I had a book signing. I feel silly doing it but in a weird way it helps me feel secure in my decisions.
